Your Songwriting Task
Theme: Meditation
Guideline:
As we all know, music can be powerful and healing. This week, let’s explore making music that has the power to change people’s state of being – to create more calm and peaceful feelings. I’m not suggesting you write music to meditate on, though you can, but more so music that is a meditation – perhaps in the writing, singing, playing or listening. Again, the theme is loose. Make of it what you will.
Time Limit: 1 hour
Listening Guide: Listen to the following songs. Do you feel a change in your state of being by listening?
It Goes For Miles
Songwriter – Helen Shanahan
“Writing this song brought me back to a time I felt peaceful – which was driving through the Scottish Highlands with my husband Matt in 2017. The landscape took my breath away, and I was just in awe of the beautiful surroundings. Every time I needed to feel calm, I looked through my photos of the spacious rolling hills and it gave me a sense of peace. The song took on a new life when I took it to my friend/guitarist/producer Jon Clements of 02 Productions in Perth. What started as a very straightforward folk song turned into a song with driving guitars reflecting a road trip – like the one we took in 2017.”
Music of the Spheres
Songwriter – Byron Short (Artist Name: Sunset Junkies)
The seed of this 13 minute track was written in the Club to the theme ‘Meditation’ and was the final track on the Sunset Junkies epic album “Cosmos”. Byron created a ‘prayer’ around the mantra “Aseem Pyaar” meaning ‘unending love’ in Hindi. There are so many layers to this track, get comfortable, close your eyes and let yourself be changed.
Oceanside
Songwriter – Hannah Athanasiadis (Artist Name: Hannah Ana)
“I feel it all – mind, body and soul. Be still again, return once more. Empty spaces, gentle vibrations. Deep elation coursing through my veins…The current will carry me home.” – Hannah Ana, Oceanside
This track was the debut single for Club member and Level Up Club graduate, Hannah Ana, who went onto release an entire EP of songs written in the Club.
